People in the Kajiado district of Kenya suffer from frequent droughts and food shortages. A government school feeding programme operates most days. Food is cooked on open fires, and as it's a deforested area, each child has to bring a piece of wood to school every morning. Installing a more fuel-efficient stove at a school, uses much less wood to cook the same amount of food. As well as less time (or money) spent getting fuel, food is cooked more quickly and properly, it also becomes possible to cook more nutritious foods that take longer such as beans and pulses. Reducing the amount of wood needed for cooking also helps a community use their local resources more sustainably.
These stoves are using less firewood than the tripod stones which use 5 times more fuel. The use of energy saving stoves has reduced carbon emission due to proper burning coupled with advocacy for use of the right type of fuel (completely dried wood).
Concern Universal has installed a 40 litre energy saving stove funded by X-Calibur International at Primary Boys Boarding School in Kajiado Central District. This stove is going to be of great help to this institution not only in cooking, but also in reducing carbon emissions and cooking time frame.
The stove, even though small has increased the capacity of cooking large quantities of meals for this boarding institution. The stove retains up to 89% of heat therefore cooking with minimal firewood. The stove is made of steel and lined with a thick layer of kiln bricks and fire proof cement which provides for heat retention. The stove indirectly links to Millennium Development Goal –Achieve Universal Primary Education by keeping pupils in school.
Primary Boys Boarding School, the beneficiary of this stove is integrated with physically handicapped and blind pupils among able bodied ones. It has a population of 500 pupils. This facility will ensure that all children are served together rather than in shifts.
The school management and pupils were very excited when the stove was installed. Teachers expressed interest in acquiring smaller capacity energy saving stoves for use in their homes.
